One of Man's basic needs if not the most important of them all, Food consumed for its nutritional benefits, faces huge threats as waste lands spreads, Pests develop resistance and floods devastates agricultural fields
Further to this, is the threat posed by the remedy to the aforementioned; (Food crops, Genetically Modified).

As a result of the threat posed by pest and drought on food supply man has ones again stepped in to remedy itself, and as a result posing more threat to its own survival.
The result of which is the development of new species of crops genetically modified to withstand the threats posed by pest, that has seen crops withstand the effect of drought and surpassing the shelf life beyond the expectation of anyone.

Bigger and brighter, more appealing to the eyes, richer in nutrient surpassing its NATURAL estimates, These food and crops popularly called GM food occupy the major markets of most developing nations.
Technically:
Genetically modified foods (GM foods) are produced from organisms that have had changes introduced into their DNA using methods of Genetic Engineering. This process allows for the introduction of desired qualities as well as eliminating of undesirable qualities, ceding greater control over undesirable qualities a method which selective breeding and mutation breeding could as well achieve.
"Genetically modified organisms (GMOs)can be defined as organisms (i.e. plants, animals or microorganisms) in which the genetic material (DNA) has been altered in a way that does not occur naturally by mating and/or natural recombination".

Just as a wise man ones puts it new breed without the old breed is greed. The greed of which we enjoy at the expense of our health.
Reports about the negative aspect of GM FOOD has been dismissed and swept under the carpet by money making conglomerates to enhance profit, mortgaging the health of its consumers.
From common sense it applies that fruits and crops whose genetics haven been modified, supplies modified minerals and vitamins which in turn gets absorbed into the human cells and genome automatically infusing its modification into the original DNA, producing a reciprocal modifications which usually translates into undesirable consequences (as vitamins and minerals contain the basic units from which DNA are formed an important component of every cell, cells from which tissues and organs are formed).
ECONOMICALLY:

ECONOMICALLY:
The economic significance of GM Food over the years as seen from HUGE PROFITS to LARGE HARVEST RESERVES have present themselves in irresistible offers as can be pointed out in bumper harvest to durability of food product longer shelf life, nutritionally over nourished.
Genetically,
GM products have so far posed many challenges which include but not limited to:
- Production of abnormal cells
- Modification of organ functions
- Modification in biological processes
- Creating an imbalance in biochemical processes
- Production of modified cells, (abnormal cells)
Haven been traced to consumption of GM FOODS, of course nutritionally beneficial but genetically harmful.
HOW SAVE IS THE FOOD WE CONSUME?
A report by the American Academy of Environmental Medicine warns that consumption of GM foods can lead to infertility, immune dysfunction, accelerating aging, problems with cholesterol synthesis, insulin regulation, cell signalling and protein formation, as well as causing adverse changes in the liver, kidney, spleen and gastrointestinal system.
Emphasis should shift to further testing to satisfy concerns over potential
toxicity, allergenicity, gene transfer to humans or genetic outcrossing to
other organisms.
Back home here in NIGERIA, like most developing countries who have been recipient of food aid coupled with the heavy reliance on imported food from renowned producers of genetically modified foods, maybe it's time to question the nature of these assistance generously rendered.
The debate should move further from labeling of GM Food wherever there are provided, to policies to prevent the extinction of the food crops in its original form, to prevent the indiscriminate dumping of GM products on developing countries and additional emphasis should also be laid on strengthening food safety systems in and between all countries.
